Всем спасибо. Нашел ответ на свой вопрос в книге "Advanced Qt Programming" by Mark Shumerfield:

....In the Zipcodes case we insert one empty ZipcodeItem for each row that is to be
inserted. In fact the zipcodes2 application never calls this method directly; but
it does call insertRow() in addZipcode(), and that method (implemented in the
base class) polymorphically calls insertRows() with the row and a count of 1.

несколько раз по этому поводу перечитывал документацию и явного подобного описания не нашел.
